One February night, my friend invited me to her housewarming party in Jersey City. As a girl originally from upstate New York and living in Manhattan at the time, I never crossed the river—at least not willingly. In fact, I used to beg my Jersey friends to consolidate all their events into one big party, so I only had to make the trip once a year. But something about this night felt different. Maybe it was because it counted as my yearly visit… or maybe because God had entirely different plans.

Our story truly began at that housewarming party in early 2023—hosted by my college best friend and one of Josh’s longtime hometown friends (major shoutout to Danielle Marzano for being the accidental matchmaker of the century). It was later in the night, just before everyone headed to the bars, when Josh and I first crossed paths.

Josh, slightly drunk and fully entertained by his own joke, introduced himself as “Jake” (shoutout Jake Robinowitz!). I couldn’t help but laugh and play along—“Okay, Jake”—before brushing him off and assuming I’d never see this man again. The next day, after barely two minutes of actual conversation with “Jake,” I asked Danielle, “Wait… who was your friend again?” She responded immediately with, “JOSH. Are you serious right now?”

Later that night, my phone buzzed with a message from the real Josh. He confessed that he usually gives out a fake name and number, but for some reason—maybe fate, maybe Jersey City magic—he didn’t want to do that with me. Instead, he asked for my number and told me he’d love to take me on a date.

This led to a series of dates and getting to know each other—Josh always volunteering to come into the city at first, and eventually me agreeing to meet him in Jersey City, a place I’ve grown to really love and appreciate.

Somehow, on a night that started as just another party in a city I never expected to love, Josh and I met—and everything clicked. From playful introductions and shared laughter to discovering how much we enjoyed being together, that night marked the beginning of a partnership built on friendship, fun, and love. What began as a playful mix-up with “Jake” led to finding the person we were meant to share our lives with.
